With winter in full swing and spring still over a month away, indoor gatherings are hard to avoid. However, while staying cozy inside offers relief from the cold, it also creates an ideal environment for the spread of illnesses like the flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19 and norovirus.

Staying up to date on vaccines is a crucial preventive measure to protect yourself and your community from contagious viruses, but there are other habits you can incorporate into your routine.

Here are a few simple tips to further reduce your risk of catching or spreading illnesses like the cold and flu:

Wash your hands frequently
Handwashing is an extremely effective tool to help keep you healthy. Wash your hands using soap and water for at least 20 seconds as often as needed. It’s also advisable to keep an anti-viral cleanser or hand sanitizer* handy for those in-between moments when you may not have access to a sink.

Disinfect high-touch surfaces
Items such as door handles or handles on public transportation and even your cellphone are considered high-touch surfaces. Disinfect these with alcohol-based wipes whenever possible before touching them. It’s also important to wash textiles like bedding and towels frequently with hot water and detergent.

Avoid touching your face
Be mindful of touching your eyes, nose, or mouth throughout the day to minimize germ transmission. If you must touch your face, wash your hands before and after to stay safe.

Be mindful of others
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, your elbow, or a face covering when sneezing or coughing. If possible, stay home when you’re feeling sick to avoid infecting others. Be sure to seek care from a doctor if your symptoms worsen.

*Note, according to the CDC, hand sanitizer alone is not effective against norovirus.
