Shifting the Narrative for World Obesity Day

By Vitality
Share:

Too often, conversations around health, disease risk and obesity are reduced to sterile percentages and rankings that don’t support a whole-person approach. This World Obesity Day, we join the call for open and empathetic discussions about obesity.

Weight stigma is harmful and often counterproductive, increasing the risk of disordered eating and weight gain. Shaming individuals with higher body weight can lead to mental health issues, including substance abuse and reduced engagement in healthy behaviors like physical activity and preventive care.

Doctors, family members, friends and even our inner thoughts can contribute to weight stigma and size-based discrimination. These experiences are harmful both in the short- and long-term, necessitating a multifaceted approach to foster a more inclusive environment.

A common misconception driving weight stigma is the belief that one can simply “go on a diet” to overcome obesity with enough determination. However, obesity is complex, with risk factors including systemic variables, personal history, genetics and lifestyle. The solution is not straightforward, and weight bias exacerbates the challenge of navigating obesity.

To effectively and compassionately support those living with obesity, we must shift to more positive discussions and comments. That’s why we are committed to creating a welcoming platform for judgment-and shame-free discussions.

Engaging in empathetic and authentic conversations about weight can lead to deeper connections and better health outcomes. By changing the narrative around obesity, we can contribute to happier, healthier and longer lives for everyone.
