What You Can Do to Avoid the Flu

Share:

One of the best ways to prevent getting sick this flu season is by getting vaccinated. Getting vaccinated can help reduce the risk of infection and can reduce symptom severity if you do get sick from the virus. Health experts recommend adults and children older than 6 months be vaccinated against COVID and the flu. Only children under 6 months, people with life-threatening egg allergy, or those who have had a previous allergic reaction to the flu vaccine are advised not to have the annual flu vaccine.

A new vaccine is developed each year in anticipation of the upcoming flu virus, so it is important to receive a shot annually. There are a variety of outlets where you can receive a flu shot. Often employers host a flu shot clinic onsite, so be on the lookout for company-wide announcements at your workplace. Just about every drugstore offers flu shots, as do community or senior centers. And, of course, your doctor’s office is always a good place to get your flu shot! Don’t delay – make your appointment now.

In addition to getting the flu shot, you can help stop the spread of the flu by taking everyday preventive steps and taking antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. Take these practical steps:

  • Wash your hands regularly: Wash your hands with soap and water often, for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating or touching your face and after touching high-use objects, such as doorknobs and remote controls. It is also advisable to use antiviral cleansers or sprays on objects and surfaces that are often touched.
  • Avoid contact with sick people: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine), except to get medical care or for other necessities.
  • Wear a face mask: If you need to leave the house, wear a face mask in public to protect those around you.
  • Cover your cough: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands right afterward.
